About the Artist

Lisa and Wilbur (Photo by Bruce Boatner)

Lisa Ettl Doue was born in Yuba City, California and raised in the rich farmlands of Northern California. The daughter of a crop farmer, her upbringing encouraged an appreciation for nature and the changing of seasons. She began painting landscapes in oil at the age of six under the tutelage of her aunt, Grace Ettl. This early exposure to painting and drawing proved to be instrumental in her later development as an artist.

Growing up in the country, there were few distractions and the natural world became the object of her curiosity. "I became mesmerized with the laws of nature - especially the nature of light." The questions became more and more philosophical in college where Doue enrolled as an engineering major. Drawn to the beauty of natural law, she ended up majoring in Physics.

After college, Ms. Doue worked for thirteen years in various engineering positions in the Silicon Valley. She was reintroduced to painting in the mid-1990s by a friend, Bruce Boatner, who invited her to an outdoor painting class. "When I started drawing and painting again after 25 years, it seemed as though no time at all had passed. It was like meeting an old friend."

A native Californian, her work has been strongly influenced by the Early California Impressionists including Percy Grey, Marion Wachtel, and Albert Thomas DeRome. She is also highly influenced by the European Romantic Painters including JMW Turner, Claude Lorraine and Camille Corot. It is the rich combination of the impressionist and romantic schools, and her allegiance to her own vision and Process, that guide Lisa in the creation of each work.
